The entire world is in the grips of COVID-19 pandemic, and one of the most remarkable reactions to the crisis has been the swift action governments have taken to provide economic support for those who have been forced out of work. The global response has included the United States, as on March 12th revisions were made by the U.S. Department of Labor regarding new, more relaxed rules regarding eligibility for unemployment insurance. Specifically, those who have lost their jobs as a result of the virus will be provided a significant cushion in the form of the revised unemployment insurance (UI) compensation plan.
In addition to the March 12th extensions to the existing unemployment insurance eligibility rules, on March 30th the policy was revised again so that others affected by the global pandemic would also be included. Eligibility was added for those who are self-employed, independent contractors, gig workers, and people with a limited work history.
The revised policy provides those who are unemployed with an additional $600 per week in unemployment insurance compensation and will be available to them for an additional 13 weeks, totaling up to six months. This is a significant increase in the benefits being offered, as the average amount being paid prior to the change was roughly $300 per week and usually is only provided for four months, though each state has its own rules.
The funding for these additional monies has been provided by Congress, but it is the responsibility of each individual state to distribute the funds and administer the revised program. Below you will find links for all 50 states so you can access the information pertinent to you.
